My bucket list just got shorter

We went Whale Watching in Long Beach California. Not only is Long Beach really quite beautiful – ah so many Palm Trees, but the best thing about it is that you can go on a blue whale watching tour! Blue whales have been my favourite animals since I was about 8 years old and it has always been my dream to actually see one in the open ocean. The blue whale is the largest animal on the planet. It’s heart has the size of a small car and it can get up to 30 metres long. These whale were nearly extinct in the last century, but thankfully its population seems to recover. However these mammals are still incredibly rare and in the whole western hemisphere it is estimated that there are about 3000-4000 animals left – throughout the whole ocean! They usually never travel in a group, so little is yet known about their social behaviour with their peers.

In Long Beach California blue whales can be spotted between July and September and so of course we booked a cruise.

The 3 hour journey that brought us near the Catalina Island had not only the sightings of 3 blue whales on board, but we also drove through a huge school of common dolphins – there were over a thousand of them all around us. The boat had a marine life biologist on board who taught us al those interesting facts about these amazing creatures. All in all it was a great fantastic superb amazing trip and I actually saw not only one but 3 fully grown blue whales not more than 20 metres away. I couldn’t have dreamt of a better day.

Just amazing. Enjoy.

These common dolphins were amazing.

But of course the real star was the blue whale. Who is called blue whale because of how the water is colored when he dives back down again – shiny blue.

Check out this video, we made of it. Bearing in mind, that the width of the fluke has a diameter of 4,50m.
